The UK shoe sizing system has developed with an Anglo-Saxon unit of length, the barleycorn, serving as the point of reference.
Historically, the barleycorn was the actual length of a barleycorn. More recently, the barleycorn has been standardised as 8.5mm and has still been used as a unit in the shoe sizing system. For example, notice that size 3.5 is one barleycorn longer than size 3 etc.
In UK, women shoe sizes range from 3 (rarely 2) to 9.5 while typical men shoe sizes are 6 (rarely 5.5) – 11.5.

The barleycorn can be further broken down into the poppyseeds. 1 barleycorn is equal to 4 poppyseeds.
Have you heard about the barleycorn and the poppyseed before?

Technically Scotland doesn't count because they abolished the use of counties, hence why Inverness shire is not on the list. |
